When our future was death, Jesus Christ came in and gave us life. To sing this song we must first recognize the state of humanity before the coming, sacrifice, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. In the beginning of human history, our relationship with God was perfect. God walked among humanity. God spoke directly to humanity. God gave, and is still giving, humanity their very breath.
This state of bliss changed when the devious serpent came into the picture and persuaded Adam and Eve (the first human beings) to desire knowledge over their relationship with God.
This brought about the vast ‘chasm,’ or the highest ‘mountain,’ that we are unable to cross on our own. In one moment, the future of the world changed drastically. The pure relationship with God was gone. In order to bring us back into the beautiful relationship with God that we once had, God had to put into motion His holy plan of redemption and forgiveness.
This holy plan’s pivotal moment finds Jesus on the cross pouring out His blood for the redemption of humanity. The God we have consistently dishonored from the beginning of history has sent Himself into our world to save His creation from their own brokenness. Jesus lived the perfect life, yet was condemned to a sinner's death. Thanks be to God that the story did not end in the death of our Savior!
This song offers such a beautiful picture of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Then came the morning that sealed the promise. Your buried body began to breathe. Out of the silence, the roaring Lion declared the grave has no claim on me.” It is easy to think of the resurrection event without really thinking about what happened in the resurrection. Jesus died. Jesus was in the grave, breathless, cold, and buried for three days. All hope seemed to fade away. Then miraculously the breath of God once again filled Jesus’ lungs. This breath is now never going to leave Jesus’ lungs again. Death no longer has a hold on Jesus - it is defeated.
The God of the universe stepped down from glory to be sacrificed for the sins of His people.
1 Peter 1:3 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” Because of the very God whom we disobeyed, we can be born again into a living hope in Jesus Christ, who offers us new life because He was raised to new life. We are alive because Jesus is alive. With the sacrifice of Jesus comes the reconciliation of our relationship with God. We are no longer estranged from God but are in the family of God. God gives us knowledge of Him and offers us a way to have a relationship with Him – uniting us with His Son. Being united with Christ has caused the chains of our sin to be broken. We are slaves to sin no more; we are welcomed and adored. We can live with the confidence that we have a mediator between us and God. We have a Spirit who fixes our prayers before they get to God. We have a Savior who pleads with the Father to view us, sinners saved by grace, through the lens of His Son's sinlessness rather than our sin.
God, help us live into this living hope, Jesus Christ, through the power of His Holy Spirit.
