Way Maker

In our world of chaos and busyness it can be difficult to stop long enough to let ourselves pay attention even to our thoughts. We don’t often take time to put our phones down, turn Netflix off and have real conversations with those around us. How much less are we likely to put those things down to have a real conversation with God? And God is always around us, always with us, and always in us.

It is a powerful thing to speak (or sing) the reality that God is present. Present when we are worshipping and when we are not. Present when we realize it and present when we do not. We must remind ourselves that God is constantly moving, working, touching, healing (bodies and minds), changing lives, and mending hearts. When we remind ourselves that God is present we must worship. We must open ourselves to the possibility that this physical world is connected with the spiritual world. God is present, active, and working.

This song is all about proclaiming truths about God. God is the way maker. God is the miracle worker. God is the promise keeper. God is the light in the darkness. This God is our God and is the only God.

Jesus speaks of Himself as all of these things. In John 14:6 Jesus says, “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus is the one Who provides the way, is the way, and gives the Spirit to lead us along the way. Jesus is the one who has made it possible to come to the Father and is the way we can go to the Father.

God is the miracle worker. Both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. In the Old Testament we see miraculous things happen such as Daniel and his lovely stay with the lions and when Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego spent some time in the fiery furnace. God showed His power in those situations and the story continued in the New Testament with Jesus. Right at the beginning of the New Testament is the miracle of Jesus’ birth. If that weren’t enough, Jesus shows His power throughout the Gospels by healing people, raising people from the dead, answering questions that people were thinking about and so on.

God has never broken a promise and never will. It is who He is – honest, good, just, righteous, holy, pure. The list goes on and on.

John 1 says that Jesus is in fact the light in the darkness – the light that will not be overcome.

Finally, in Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Psalms, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Joel, Jeremiah, Zechariah, 2 Corinthians, Hebrews, and Revelation God is mentioned as being our God. What an immense comfort we have knowing that we belong to the One who created the universe. He is our God today and when the new heaven and new earth comes Revelation says, “the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them.” What a beautiful thing to look forward to!

So much complexity and beauty displayed in such simple words of this song. Let yourself slow down enough to put down your phone, turn off your TV, and remind yourself of who God is. You will not regret it! Time with God is time well spent (the best way we can spend our time).

Scripture

---

Genesis 17:7

“And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.”

Psalm 139:7-12

“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.”

Luke 1:46-47

“And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

Worship came flowing from Mary when she truly realized that the Lord is present to her in a very present way.

John 1:4-5

“In Him was the life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

John 14:16

“I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
